Accessible Theatre

The audience embrace a performance by The Heroes.‘The Heroes Project’ provides a range of ‘all embracing’ and ‘shared’ activities for people of all abilities with a special emphasis on the engagement and empowerment of people from the learning disabled community.

In 2004 we began to explore ‘Accessible Theatre Experiences’. Shows included ‘pastel’ shade stage lighting to create sensory experiences, large font programmes and ‘signed’ interpretation of performances. We presented our ‘signer’ as a performing member of the cast and therefore an important aspect of the performance itself. This was something quite unique at the time and a concept that many theatre and performance groups are only just beginning to experiment with.

The average attendance of disabled people at these events averaged 28% while the average attendance of disabled people attending theatre shows generally was estimated to be just 0.4%.

Today, ‘The Heroes Project’ uses its accessible theatre techniques to support its performing arts based initiatives.
